Itinerary: Accra to Akosombo via Shai Hills

Depart Accra after breakfast and drive east toward Shai Hills Forest Reserve (approximately 1 hour). This protected area, spanning over 5,000 hectares, is home to diverse wildlife and holds deep cultural significance for the Krobo people. Embark on a guided nature walk through the reserve, exploring ancient caves that once served as sacred refuges for the Krobo during tribal conflicts. Your guide will share stories of the caves' historical importance and spiritual significance. Keep your eyes open for wildlife including baboons, antelopes, ostriches, and numerous bird species that inhabit the reserve. The reserve's unique landscape combines savanna grasslands with rocky outcrops and wooded areas, creating varied habitats. After lunch, continue your journey to Akosombo (approximately 1.5 hours), a town famous for the Akosombo Dam on Lake Volta. Upon arrival, check into your accommodation overlooking the lake. In the late afternoon, enjoy a relaxing boat cruise on Lake Volta, the world's largest man-made lake by surface area. Watch the sunset over the tranquil waters while local fishermen cast their nets. Itinerary: Akosombo to Wli

After breakfast, depart Akosombo and journey northeast toward the Volta Region (approximately 3-4 hours drive). The scenic route takes you through the Volta Lake region, passing small fishing villages, cocoa plantations, and lush green hills. Your destination is the area around Wli (pronounced "Vlee" or "Vli"), located near the border with Togo in the Hohoe district. En route, stop at Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, a community-based conservation project protecting sacred Mona and Patas monkeys. These monkeys are revered by the local community and are remarkably friendly, often approaching visitors. Take a guided walk through the forest, observing the monkeys in their natural habitat and learning about traditional beliefs and conservation efforts that have protected them for generations. Continue to your accommodation near Wli, nestled in the foothills of the Agumatsa Mountain Range. The evening is yours to relax and prepare for tomorrow's waterfall hike. Overnight near Wli.

Itinerary: Wli Waterfalls Hike

Today's highlight is the hike to Wli Waterfalls (Agumatsa Falls), Ghana's tallest waterfall cascading approximately 60 meters (200 feet) down a cliff face. After breakfast, meet your local guide at the entrance to the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary. The hike to the lower falls takes about 45 minutes along a well-maintained trail through lush rainforest. Your guide will point out diverse plant species, butterflies, and birds along the way. The forest is home to over 200 bird species, including the rare white-necked rockfowl. Upon reaching the lower falls, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views and the thunderous sound of water plummeting into a natural pool below. If you're feeling adventurous and physically fit, you can swim in the refreshing pool beneath the falls (water can be cool). For the more adventurous, there's an option to continue hiking to the upper falls (approximately 2-3 hours additional hike each way), which offers even more spectacular views and a more remote, pristine experience. The trail to the upper falls is steep and challenging, requiring good fitness levels. After your waterfall experience, return to your accommodation for rest and relaxation. Overnight near Wli.

Itinerary: Return to Accra

After breakfast and a final look at the beautiful Volta Region landscape, begin your return journey to Accra (approximately 4-5 hours). The drive takes you back through the Volta Region's scenic countryside, with opportunities to stop for refreshments and leg stretches. Along the way, you can make a brief stop at Aburi Botanical Gardens (if time and traffic permit), a beautiful 65-hectare garden established in 1890, showcasing indigenous and exotic plant species. Take a short walk through the gardens and enjoy the cooler mountain climate. Continue to Accra, where the tour concludes. Depending on your flight schedule or onward plans, your guide will drop you at your hotel, the airport, or another preferred location. As you leave, you carry memories of Ghana's diverse ecosystems, from savanna wildlife to rainforest waterfalls, and a deeper appreciation for the country's natural beauty and conservation efforts.
