Coming 2026
Burkina Faso Expeditions, Coming 2026
A Sahel route few travellers know, from the Grand Mosque of Bobo-Dioulasso to the Sindou Peaks and the painted villages of Tiebele.
Why Burkina Faso, and why now
The Sahel at its most surprising
Burkina Faso is landlocked, off most itineraries, and quietly one of the richest cultural routes in West Africa. The journey we are building starts in Bobo-Dioulasso, where the Grand Mosque rises in mud and wood as a masterpiece of Sudano-Sahelian architecture, and the old Dioulasso-Ba quarter keeps the rhythm of a city known as the cultural capital of the country. South toward Banfora, the Sindou Peaks rise in narrow stone fins above the savanna, with the Karfiguela waterfalls and the Tengrela hippo lake nearby.
Like our Ghana and Benin routes, the Burkina Faso programme is being built with local Burkinabe guides who grew up on these towns and trails. Small groups, the right contacts, and time for the things that rarely make a brochure: the painted geometric houses of the Gourounsi village of Tiebele, the bronze and mask traditions around Ouagadougou, and FESPACO, the largest film festival on the continent, held in the capital every two years. The standalone 2026 itinerary will run as a multi-day journey, with shorter add-on extensions for travellers already on a Ghana or Cote d’Ivoire tour with us.
Bobo-Dioulasso and the Grand Mosque
The cultural capital of Burkina Faso, its Sudano-Sahelian Grand Mosque studded with wooden toron beams, and the old Dioulasso-Ba quarter with one of the liveliest live-music scenes in the Sahel.
Sindou Peaks and the Banfora country
A ridge of wind-carved stone fins rising above the southwest savanna, paired with the Karfiguela waterfalls and the Tengrela lake, where hippos surface among the lilies at dusk.
Tiebele, Ouagadougou and FESPACO
The painted geometric facades of the Gourounsi royal court at Tiebele, and the capital Ouagadougou, home to FESPACO, the largest film festival in Africa, and a deep tradition of bronze and mask craft.
